Baby vs. Bibs

When Norah was just a twinkle in my eye I registered for cute little pink bibs. The bibs worked great for spittle and drool but now it's time to pull out the big guns! Real food means real messes! Now I am on the hunt for bibs that are fresh, fun and most of all easy to clean. Here are a few that caught my eye.
These fun animal prints remind me of our family's first trip to the zoo!

Baby vs. Sweet Potato

I decided to go ahead and try introducing a baby food staple; the much loved sweet potato. It's yummy and was easier then I thought it would be to make into a smooth puree. However, if you decided to feed your child nothing but sweet potatoes for a couple of days please be ready for sweet potato diapers. I was surprised by the fact that they look about the same coming out as they do going in.  The huge difference being the smell. (Maybe I shouldn't have said that) This lovable root is easy to make and very cheap. I bought a 3 lb. bag of the tasty tators at Aldi for $1.99!

The Recipe
1)  2-3 Small Sweet Potatoes or 1 large Tator, Washed & Peeled
2) 1TS Water
3) A Dash of Pumpkin Pie Spice (completely and utterly optional)

Wash and peel your sweet potatoes and put them into a saucepan. Fill with water until the spuds are covered. Bring to boil. Boil for about 10 mins or until the potatoes are very soft when you stab them with a fork. Drain. Place the Potatoes into a bowl and puree them with your electric mixer. If you have a blender or food processor you can use that too. The mixture will look just like mashed potatoes -- because it is mashed potatoes. Scoop about a tablespoon of your mashed potatoes into a small bowl. Add about a Tablespoon of water. I also added Pumpkin Pie Spice to make it taste good. Just a dash.
The rest of the mixture I saved and put in the fridge*. It's easy to make little quick mixes from you fridge.  Just scoop out a tablespoon of sweet potatoes boil some water (you will only need about a tablespoon) and mix it together. The hot water along with the cold mashed potatoes will make the food ready to eat. Norah sang while she ate it!

*You can also freeze for later if you want.

Baby vs. Avocado

On my Baby Girl’s 6 month Doctor’s appointment we talked with her pediatrician about first foods. Dr. Jacob’s was really helpful and let us know that introducing her to foods one at a time is key. A good rule of thumb is one new food for three days before you try the next food. We have done rice cereal for while now. I’m ready for the next food! Let’s try avocados! Avocados are great because you don’t have to cook them! I am also drawn to them because I don’t have to puree it. Easy A!

The Recipe:
1) One ripe Avocado - I got an organic Avocado at Trader Joe’s. A ripe Avocado has some give when you press your fingers into it but it’s not too soft.
2) A fork

Roll the avocado on the counter or cutting board to loosen the fruit from the seed. Cut in half then dig out a small slice. Mash it with a fork till it’s a nice smooth texture. The texture is nice and baby friendly without adding BM or formula. You can store slices of unused avocado to mash another day. If you store with the seed the avocado will last longer.

Baby vs. Spoons

I got a little emotional at the check-out when I bought Baby Girl's first spoon. I know a spoon is not a cell phone or car keys. However, it is a sign that my Little One is growing up!

Sleek lines, bold colors, and simplistic designs are some of my favorite qualities of modern baby gear. Some infant products deserve to be on display at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and not covered with cereal. These spoons are no exception.

Baby Girl loves the soft tips on these spoons and chews them while she eats.
Beaba First Stage Spoons $19.95; amazon.com

Baby's love contrasting colors and so do I!
Munchkin Soft Tip Infant Spoons $3.99; diapers.com

Had to throw in the traditional baby spoon. Instead of wood this spoon is made of bamboo.
Bambu Baby Feeding Spoons $9.99; amazon.com

The spatula shape of these are handy  for messy little lips and cheeks!
Dr. Brown's Long Spatula Spoon $4.49; amazon.com

I love the little faces on these!
Baby Bjorn Spoons $10.95; diapers.com

A fun modern twist on a classic sterling silver spoon.
Nambe 3 piece set $29.95; amazon.com

Happy Tuesday!

About Me

I'm a mom for the first time ever.
I love my daughter so much it's silly.

I have been thinking about starting a blog for the past few years. I was going to start a blog when I moved to Kansas City 2 years ago. I was going to blog my pregnancy. My Baby Girl is now 6 months old.

As the solid food adventures grew closer I found myself asking women at the grocery store, the library, church, and the farmer's market what foods I should try and what I should avoid. I don't think I am the only first time mom with food questions. So what better way to learn and share my findings than on a food blog for babies! I am making Baby Girl's food myself attempting to be organic and natural and all that jazz. Some foods will be a hit and some will be a huge miss. Roll up your sleeves this will be a messy ride!

Baby vs. Brown Rice Cereal

This was Baby Girl's first experience with solid food. She liked it! It is so fun watching her experience even the simplest things for the first time. I think she liked the spoon most of all! I like this recipe because it is using brown rice instead of the traditional white. Utilizing your coffee grinder to make baby cereal is such a great idea! Make sure to clean it out really well! No caffeine for baby!

The Recipe:

1) 1 TS Short Grain Brown Rice: I got mine in bulk at Whole Foods.

2) 1 cup Water

3) A splash of BM or Formula if desired

With an Electric Coffee Grinder finely chop your rice into a flour. In a small sauce pan boil water and rice flour for 10 minutes. Stir frequently. Pour in a small bowl and stir mixture to allow to cool. I also would add a little cold water to thin the cereal. Add a splash of BM or formula for flavor.
